Veltassa (generic name: patiromer) is a medication prescribed for adults to manage hyperkalemia, a condition characterized by high levels of potassium in the blood. Veltassa works by binding to potassium in the gut before it can be absorbed into the bloodstream, effectively lowering potassium levels in the body.

Eliquis (generic name Apixaban) is commonly used as an anticoagulant for the treatment of venous thromboembolic events, and helps to reduce the extent of blood clotting, in the treatment or prevention of strokes or systemic embolisms.

Verquvo (generic name: vericiguat) is an oral medication prescribed for adults with chronic heart failure symptoms classified as HFrEF (ejection fraction less than 45%.) Vericiguat is a novel drug that acts as a soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulator. It increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels, leading to vasodilation and improved cardiac function. It is used primarily to reduce the risk of severe cardiovascular events leading to hospitalization for heart failure. Heart failure is when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to the body. Patients with HFrEF can exhibit symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced capacity to exercise, fluid retention (edema), and accelerated heartbeat.

Jardiance (generic name: empagliflozin) is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
Empagliflozin acts as a blocker for the SGLT2 protein in the kidney tubules, whose primary function is to reduce the amount of reabsorbed glucose and sodium in the blood. This ensures that glucose and salt are expelled through urine and not returned to the bloodstream.
As well as the effect on glucose, Jardiance reduces the heart’s workload and decreases the internal pressure inside the kidney’s filtering units.

Entresto (generic names: sacubitril & valsartan) was the first and only therapy approved in the US in 2021 to treat both patients diagnosed with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) as well as many with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). It is an oral medication that is prescribed to treat people with chronic heart failure who are in danger of needing to be hospitalized when symptoms get worse. It also helps lower the risk of death from heart failure. Entresto is usually given together with other blood pressure medications.
Sacubitril is a blood pressure medicine that works by reducing sodium levels in the blood.
Valsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) medication that keeps blood vessels from narrowing. Together, these lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

Rybelsus is a new pill-form drug for treating Type 2 diabetes containing semaglutide – the same substance as in Ozempic.  Rybelsus is an oral tablet version of semaglutide taken daily. Ozempic is an injectable form of the same medication taken once each week.  Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone produced in the gut. It is released in response to food, prompting the release of insulin and a reduction in appetite.  In the case of people with Type 2 diabetes, semaglutide works to slow down digestion. This stimulates the increased production of natural insulin. Rybelsus doesn’t work like other treatments of diabetes, that boost insulin levels from external sources (injection or oral insulin).  If you have been diagnosed as clinically obese, your doctor may prescribe Rybelsus as a weight-loss treatment along with appropriate diet controls and exercise. The primary effect of Rybelsus in this mode is as an appetite suppressant.

Saxenda, containing the active ingredient liraglutide, is a prescription medication designed to aid weight loss. It’s most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. As a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA), Saxenda works by enhancing insulin release from the pancreas, which helps regulate appetite and reduces calorie intake. This medication is also a component of Victoza, used for managing diabetes.

Saxenda is prescribed for adults who are overweight (BMI between 27 and 30) with weight-related medical issues, or those classified as obese (BMI of 30 and above). It can also be prescribed to children aged 12 to 17 who are obese (BMI of 30 and above) and weigh over 132 pounds (60 kg).
